- Miquel de Cervantes 1547-161629 Eylül 1547'de Madrid yakınlarında bir kasabada doğdu. Yoksul bir sağlık memurunun yedi çocuğundan biriydi. Babasının işi dolayısıyla pek çok yolculuk yaptı. Maddi nedenlerden dolayı eğitimini yarım bırakmak zorunda kaldı. 1570'te İtalya'ya gitti. Haçlı Seferleri'ne katılmak için donanmaya yazıldı. İnebahtı Savaşı'nda (1571) Osmanlı'ya karşı savaştı. Bu savaşta sol elini kaybetti; ama savaşmayı sürdürdü. İspanya'ya dönüş yolundayken esir alındı. 1880'de ailesinin güç bela topladığı fidye karşılığında serbest bırakıldı. Ülkesine döndü; ama İspanya'yı bıraktığı gibi bulamadı. Yaşam koşulları iyiden iyiye zorlaşmış, pahalılık artmıştı. Edebiyat ' serüvenine bu dönemde başladı. İspanya'ya döndükten sonra donanmada ambar memurluğu görevine getirildi. Burada kayıtları tutarken yaptığı bir hata nedeniyle hapse atıldı. 1605'te, başyapıtı olan Don Kişot'un ilk cildini yazdığında hapisteydi. Edebiyat tarihinin ilk romanı olan bu kitabın ikinci cildiniyse 1615'te yazdı. Don Kişot'ta, düşle gerçek arasında gidip gelen, şövalye olma heveslisi, idealist bir adam üzerinden toplumun yitirmekte olduğu değerleri anlatır.
