Robert Whitaker All Books Editorial Review
The book "Mad in America" is an eye-opening and well-written history of the treatment of mentally ill patients in England and America. It explores the relationship between psychology, drug companies, hospitals and mental illness in the US. The author portrays the unimaginable pain that patients in insane asylums had to endure in the name of science and progress but also, in some cases, due to sincere efforts of doctors trying to find better treatments. Nevertheless, a number of forces like big pharma and government intrusion seemed to prioritize other concerns over the patient's care. The book argues that the decline of mental health treatment occurred when responsible doctors were replaced by budget-minded bureaucrats and introduces the Quakers' method of caring for mentally ill patients as an effective alternative. Although the book is politically neutral, it offers an example of where government intervention failed.
